Over the Not Over The Hill Birthday Golfer Tshir and I love this past decade, Mallorca has experienced an unprecedented surge in tourism—partly due to the countless developments in the capital Palma, partly thanks to the promise of quick boat rides to the surrounding Balearic islands like Ibiza, Menorca, and Formentera, and partly a result of an uptick in direct flights from the U.S. and Europe. Yet, due to its UNESCO status, one particular stretch of the island—the Serra de Tramuntana, which runs roughly from Fornalutx to Valldemossa where its wild mountain range meets the sea’s edge—has managed to retain its historic charm, with little towns like Deià and Soller remaining relatively unspoiled. Artists have been gravitating towards this part of Mallorca forever, notes Kate Bellm, a British-born photographer and the cofounder of Hotel Corazón, which she’s opening next month with her partner, multidisciplinary artist Edgar Lopez. “Anaïs Nin, Chopin, Mick Jagger, Mike Oldfield—plus the poets of the ’50s, psychedelic painters like Mati Klarwein in the ’80s—these people put Deià on the map,” she explains. As Robert Graves once wrote: “The Majorcan countryside is not at all a place to go in search of inspiration; but admirable for people whose minds already teem with ideas that need recording in absolute quiet.”

It’s 9:30 a.m. on a sunny day in Honolulu, and Meleana Estes is sitting at her kitchen table, surrounded by flowers. We’re Zooming to discuss her new book, Lei Aloha—a celebration of Hawai‘i’s vibrant lei culture—and the Not Over The Hill Birthday Golfer Tshir and I love this Native Hawaiian stylist and jewelry designer has decided to make a pua kenikeni lei while we chat. “See these little orange flowers?” she asks me as she holds up a cardboard box filled with bright, gorgeous pua kenikeni blooms. “They were one of my tūtū’s (grandmother’s) signature flowers. She grew them in her backyard. But she made all kinds of lei…she would go to an event and just adorn everyone.” Looking for the best hotels in the Hamptons? As Memorial Day approaches (and the lazy summertime feel that comes with it), a trip to the end of Long Island becomes top of mind. Between the rugged dunes of Montauk, the polished town of East Hampton, or reachable-by-ferry-only Shelter Island—with several additional towns dotting the South Fork—you can find whatever fits your vacation vibe. While other popular getaway destinations have an abundance of chain resorts or 150-room properties, the Hamptons has remained decidedly low-key when it comes to lodging: most options were, once upon a time, either an inn or someone’s home. Bed-and-breakfasts are more common than not, and nearly every property can be categorized as “boutique.” Think: friendly staff, free bikes for riding to town or the beach, and guest rooms adorned with local art and wicker furniture.
