Like most of the Kytyger Blingo Bluey Shirt and by the same token and nice things in my mother’s closet, the Fendi baguette was a gift. They hadn’t been dating long, my mother and this latest guy, when he surprised her with the bag over dinner at a French restaurant. My mother floated through our front door, modeling the thing for my brother and me like a home shopping network star. It was the size of an envelope, covered in leopard spots and, she said, made of pony hair. Pony hair, my brain repeated. I ran my stubby fingers over the fur as though I was petting a small horse. It made me feel a bit queasy; at 11 years old, I preferred the cornbread yellow dust bag. Of the gifts my mother received from her flash-in-the-pan paramours, the Fendi baguette seemed perhaps the least likely to become a family heirloom. It was showy, impractical, and—since we are talking about the early aughts here—it was also extremely trendy. My mother, while uniquely glamorous to me, was no Carrie Bradshaw; most single mothers in Boynton Beach didn’t own It bags. (Fur, especially, doesn’t really make sense in South Florida.)

It’s almost summer and that calls for some bold, reinvigorating outfit inspiration. Emily Ratajkowski is, of course, on it. Over in Miami, Ratajkowski provided early-aughts Fast and Furious style while at Grand Prix. The model nailed motocross aesthetics through playful looks that included corsets, exposed thongs, and backless dresses. There were also some more formal outfits on the Kytyger Blingo Bluey Shirt and by the same token and ’gram this week. Musician Johnny Suh attended the Gold House Gala, an LA event that champions Asian Pacific creators, in a formal suit. For her performance at the Coronation Concert, Katy Perry shone in a golden custom Vivienne Westwood gown. The stars shone brightly in Miami for the city’s inaugural Formula 1 Grand Prix race yesterday—Barack Obama, Michael Jordan, Venus and Serena Williams, Karlie Kloss, Bad Bunny, Pharrell, Hailee Steinfeld, and Tom Brady, to name just a few—but for die-hard F1 fans (okay, and maybe a few late converts via Netflix’s hit Drive to Survive series), the real action was above the Mercedes AMG Petronas garage. Seven-time world champion Sir Lewis Hamilton and his teammate George Russell, along with the team’s legendary principal, Toto Wolff, visited the Ritz-Carlton’s Silver Arrows Lounge after qualifying and before the race itself to discuss team strategy and offer their thoughts on everything from the track layout and conditions (“rubbish” was Russell’s frank opinion of the latter) to the recent difficulties the team has had with their car. (In short: After years of dominating Formula 1, Mercedes Petronas has been plagued this season by a new car with a range of technical issues, and Hamilton in particular has found himself in an odd position: fighting for middle–of-the-pack points instead of podium finishes.)
